An extraordinary fine English victorian marquetry Sycamore, Amboyna, burr-walnut and ormolu-mounted circular tulipwood crossbanding tip-top center table with inlaid decorations depicting wicker baskets full of flowers, vines, butterflies and hummingbirds, in the manner and attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) after a design by Richard Bridgens, circa London, 1840.
Measures: Height: 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm).
Diameter: 53 1/2 inches (135.9 cm).
Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is listed in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities. He first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a 'dealer in China and glass' and by 1821 as ' an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer'. By 1826 the various facets of the business included 'buying and selling, exchanging and valuing China, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc' Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and from 1832-1837 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...

A centre table attributed to Holland and Sons related to a table in Clarence House, this exceptional table has a circular top decorated with six radiating amboyna veneers with a border of concentric marquetry rings. The decoration comprising kingwood bands within boxwood stringing, a continuous boxwood laurel wreath with ivory berries on a satinwood ground and further amboyna borders. The frieze has amboyna crossbanding and applied ormolu sunburst medallions. The support is composed of purpleheart columns inlaid with kingwood, terminating in low splayed feet, which encircle a classical urn on a plinth. The superb ormolu mounts include acanthus leaves, classical masks and patera. English, circa 1860.
A table with a similar base and particularly fine ormolu mounts was exhibited by Holland and Sons in the International Exhibition in 1862 and illustrated as plate 40 in J. B. Waring’s book (see pages 100-103 for further references to this exhibition). A further closely related piece was in the collection of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and is shown in the Morning Room in Clarence House in the Daily Mail’s article ‘Inside the private world of Prince Charles’, November 2018. For this table, I first sauce the perfect slabs for the tabletop which can take some time to find, the main thing is that you are not in a hurry, this will be a one-of-a-kind unique project. Once I have found the perfect slabs I will send you photographs for you to approve and keep you updated as we progress to the final finishing. The oil finish can either be a natural ( main photos) oak or darker or lighter shades.
Oak can also be ebonized to an almost black with the grain colour still visible, see the Photo of the ebony finishes.

The upper and lower edges with tram line details above a pair of opposite Japanese fretwork friezes, on four bowed legs cut from solid rosewood, united by a lower shelf stepped down in the centre, (reminiscent of Godwin's most famous tea table with three hinged side leafs also incorporating a stepped shelf that he designed 1872, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The circular tilt top has a central field of book-matched, figured rosewood within a broad band of cut brass inlay. The edge is boldly carved with an acanthus and dart border. The central support is hexagonal in section with a broad central flange, raised on three powerful and ornately carved legs. The knees are presented as bold acanthus carved and gadrooned volutes. The lions’ paw feet have clearly defined knuckles and claws and enclose the original brass castors. English, circa 1825.
