Mid-19th Century Amboyna Octagonal Centre Table
By Johnstone, Jeanes & Co.
Located in London, GB
A good centre table by Johnstone & Jeanes of London   Constructed in amboyna, with extensive marquetry inlays in specimen woods, and enhanced with parcel-gilt highlights. Rising from a cruciform platform base adorned with knops and having concealed castors, supporting the inlaid, and gently stepped and tapering centre column with stylized 'c' form brackets bracing the octagonal top, the outer guard band having English roses inlaid at the angles, with foliates with the national emblems of Scotland and Ireland, thistles and shamrocks. Stamped by the makers to the underside, 'Johnstone & Jeanes 67 Bond Street'. circa 1845 Published in “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” by Christopher Payne, 2023, p. 131, illustrated fig. 3.21. Johnstone, Jeanes & Co John Johnstone of Bond Street came to prominence after his collaboration with Robert Jupe, an 'upholder' of 47 Welbeck Street, Cavendish Square, London, who patented a remarkable design for a circular expanding dining table with a segmented top in 1835. After Jupe's death, the firm traded as 'Johnstone and Jeanes' from 1842 until 1880, having moved to 67 Bond Street and continuing the tradition of producing high quality furniture. After 1880, the company was re-named Johnstone & Norman. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition 1851, The International Exhibition of London in 1862, and The Paris Exhibition of 1878. Both the Royal Collection Trust and the Victoria & Albert Museum own stamped pieces of furniture in their collections. The company of Crace were designers and decorators to the Royal household from 1768 until 1899, working for every monarch from George the Third...

Early 19th Century Regency Specimen Table by Gillows of Lancaster and London
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in Dublin 8, IE
Early 19th century regency marble top specimen centre table made by Gillows of Lancaster and London, the statuary white marble top with central stylized neoclassical motif depicting a temple and star surrounded with inlaid radiating specimens of rare and ancient stones such as Giallo Antico, Verde Antico, Rosso Antico, Sienna, Jasper and Portoro set within carved gadrooned, cabochon and bead border supported on turned baluster pod with barley twist and acanthus motif on trefoil base raised over cabriole leg with acanthus motif on knee terminating on paw foot. Provenance: Torridon House Torridon House is situated on the northern shore of upper loch Torridon, beneath the dramatic mountain ridges of Beinn Alligin and Liathach, the house was built by Duncan Darroch in 1876 on an estate bought from the McBarnets and previously the possession of the Lords of the Isles. The architect was Alexander Ross, who built inverness cathedral. Constructed from the famous Torridon red sandstone, it was designed for family living, as well as to support parties during the shooting and fishing seasons. In the early 20th century it changed hands several times until it was bought by the 4th Earl of Lovelace in 1960. The Lovelaces had previously lived at Ben Damph on the south side of the Loch, which had been in their possession since 1886. Torridon is currently the home of the 5th earl and his wife. The Lovelace title belongs to the King family, who trace their history back to Exeter. Sir Peter King (circa 1669-1734) was the maternal nephew of the philosopher John Locke...

George IV Centre Table Attributed to Thomas & George Seddon, circa 1830
By Thomas & George Seddon
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Very Fine George IV Parcel-Gilt Amboyna Centre Table Attributed to Thomas & George Seddon. English, Circa 1830. The table is of finely figured Amboyna with a circular tilt-top above a triform column with parcel-gilt scrolled supports. It is raised on a conforming plinth base with foliate carved feet and concealed castors. George Seddon was the eighth child of John Seddon of Blakelea, Lancashire. His father apprenticed him to George Clemaphon of Cripplegate to learn cabinet making. He became a master cabinet maker. (He was Master of the Joiner’s Company in 1795). In the early 1750s he was sufficiently successful to acquire London House, Aldersgate Street. It consisted of extensive workshops, where furniture was made, and showrooms to display the finished products. London House had formerly been a palace of the Bishops of London. The panelled state-rooms were ideal for the display of fashionable furniture; and the chapel and library made convenient workshops. When Seddon married, he converted the garden house and infirmary into the family home. Seddon was the biggest furniture maker of his time. His furniture store covered a two acre site in Aldersgate Street. His workshop there was described by London visitor Sophie v. La Roche in 1786: "We drove first to Mr. Seddon's, a cabinet-maker,...He employs four hundred apprentices on any work connected with the making of household furniture—joiners, carvers, gilders...

Oak 19th Century Gothic Revival English Marble Topped Centre or Library Table
Located in Hudson, NY
This finely made table in the Gothic Revival taste comes from England, circa 1875. All things Gothic have had a steady love affair by the English and have enjoyed several revival periods. The best was in the second and third quarters of the 19th century which is when this table was made. Constructed of walnut the table is designed to feel monumental without being of that scale. Set on four Quatrefoil column legs that rise to a shaped pierced arch that is centered on each side by a shield. The finish is old and excellent in color and sheen. The marble top is shaped with rounded corners has a simple ogee edge and is a nice soft green. The profile of the table allows it to be used as a freestanding library...

Victorian Marquetry Tip-Top Center Table Attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock
By Edward Holmes Baldock
Located in Los Angeles, CA
An extraordinary fine English victorian marquetry Sycamore, Amboyna, burr-walnut and ormolu-mounted circular tulipwood crossbanding tip-top center table with inlaid decorations depicting wicker baskets full of flowers, vines, butterflies and hummingbirds, in the manner and attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) after a design by Richard Bridgens, circa London, 1840. Measures: Height: 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm). Diameter: 53 1/2 inches (135.9 cm). Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is listed in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities. He first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a 'dealer in China and glass' and by 1821 as ' an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer'. By 1826 the various facets of the business included 'buying and selling, exchanging and valuing China, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc' Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and from 1832-1837 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...
