Exceptional Quality and Condition, George II Padouk Centre Table, circa 1750
Located in Heathfield, GB
An amazing centre table, George II, made in solid Padouk and extremely robust and heavy. The colour and patina are fantastic, the tapered legs united by very fine ring turned stretchers with central reserve and terminating in carved claw and ball feet inset with beautiful solid brass casters. The drawer oak lined retaining much of its original hand coloured paper lining and with a sliding lid over a pen drawer and ink well. Original handle, lock and a working key. This table was made in around c. 1750 and is of a refinement and quality only seen in the work of a small number of mid 18th century cabinet makers. Thomas Chippendale Snr worked with Cuban Mahogany and Padoukand certainly the quality of construction, understanding of the timber and beautifully finish in every detail here is every bit Chippendale quality. This table is one of the finest pieces of furniture ever to come to our showroom and you will never see another in this wonderfully balanced and exciting form. The timber of such density and beauty, from a tree which was growing in the 14th century, felled in the early 18th century and left to dry for decades before being used to create this exceptional table. With provenance, in exceptional original condition. A magnificent piece of English George II furniture...

Queen Anne Red Walnut Tray Top Center Table
Located in Richmond, London
A fine antique red walnut tray-top tea table of particularly attractive small proportions, circa 1730. The solid single-piece rectangular tray top, having an applied convex molding with a beaded outside edge, above a plain veneered apron with a convex moulded skirt. Raised on four particularly graceful cabriole legs with squared knees, terminating in slender slipper pad feet. This finely proportioned tray-top tea or silver table represents the most fashionable form of tea table in New England, having the dished rectangular top with fixed legs, meant as the sculptural centerpiece of the lavish tea service without tablecloth or covering. Elegant both in form and function, this design is a masterful combination of Chinese tradition and high style English furniture fashions. The growth of tea drinking as a social custom among the elite occasioned the production of fine furniture, especially in urban centers of wealth and commerce. The tea table was the focal point of the tea ceremony and its construction and design were informed by its exotic ties to the Far East. The rectangular tops, shaped skirts and cabriole legs were features of tables made in China...
