Chinese Low Burl Top Kang Table, c. 1850
About the Item
During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games.
This 19th century kang table follows the classic form, featuring a waisted apron carved with low-relief scrollwork, a rectangular floating-panel top, and short cabriole legs. The top panel is cut from a piece of fine burl wood, selected for its density and swirling wood grain.
Small losses and splits to the wood have been lovingly remedied with antique repairs that blend seamlessly into the frame. Years of use has imparted the tabletop with inimitable texture, burnished smooth with a surface that calls to be touched.
