About

Tapio Wirkkala (Finnish, 1915-1985) was the consummate form-giver of the middle of the 20th century. He tried his craggy artisan's hand at every possible type of design project, with a stunning consistency of innovation and success, regardless of the medium. The series of coffee tables he designed in 1958 for Asko incorporated the use of inlaid decoration made from layers of various species of wood, forming ellipses and leaf-forms arrayed asymmetrically on the table's surface. These descend directly from the exquisite bowls and trays hand-carved out of aircraft plywood that Wirkkala designed and produced in tiny numbers at the start of the 1950s.

Branded on the underside: [Tapio Wirkkala / Asko / MADE IN FINLAND].
