Coffee table - Loose Fit Artist Edition with Tom Dowse.
A one-off piece combining an original artwork with beautiful furniture.
A double layered coffee table with hand painted tiles on top and a slatted lower shelf, perfect for books and magazines. The solid frame of the coffee table in English Oak gives a natural backdrop for this piece to come alive.
The frame is finished in a hard wax oil, which gives it a satin sheen and brings out the grain of the wood. Tiles provide a hard wearing and heat-resistant surface, with a satisfying contrast between their matte finish and the glossy hand painted glaze.
Tom Dowse is an artist and musician in the cult band Dry Cleaning, who lives and works in South London. Drawing forms the central preoccupation of Tom’s visual work that encompasses printmaking, textiles and ceramic sculpture. His work often weaves together elements of the everyday with autobiography, social history and folklore to create highly personalised graphic cosmogonies that echo Neolithic painting, comics and outsider art.
Tom has produced this tiled coffee table in collaboration with us at Loose Fit using painted imagery that derives from drawings he made whilst walking his dog every day in Crystal Palace park. Observations of characters, landscapes, objects and sensations inter-mingle to create a language of their own, rendered as they are, in hyper-simplified, iconographic form.

Loose Fit was started in 2018 by James Torble b.1990 England, with the aim of creating elegant furniture, designed and made to last a lifetime. James has a background in fine art, having studied at Central Saint Martins College, London, before building himself a houseboat and developing a passion for furniture and design in the process. James is a maker fascinated by his craft and the possibilities of wooden furniture. His designs are perfect for now, lovingly joined by hand in English timbers. MATERIALS
Each piece of furniture is made by hand, using locally sourced British hardwoods, such as ‘unwanted trees’ that councils have cut down.
For bespoke projects recycled surface materials can be used in the design, such as formica and marmoleum.
Finishing is offered in natural oils or soap washes, which contain less harmful chemicals than commercial varnishes and polishes (some furniture polishes contain formaldehyde!). DESIGN
At the heart of the design is the desire to make pared back, classic pieces of furniture. Keeping the skills of traditional joinery alive with modern designs and well considered details.
