About the Item

A striking and exceptionally rare enamel on copper coffee table designed by P. Törneman (Algot Törneman) for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Sweden’s premier design house and department store. This piece is from an extremely limited edition of only 14 examples, with this table marked No. 6—an unusually small production run compared to most enamel-topped furniture of the era, making it especially rare and highly collectible. The tabletop features a vibrant abstract enamel composition fired onto a solid copper panel, all resting in a beautifully constructed teak base. The color palette—bold reds, oranges, charcoals, and creams—creates a painterly and deeply layered surface with subtle gloss and texture. Importantly, the perfectly flat panel reflects exceptional technical skill. Copper, when fired at the high temperatures required for enamel, often warps or curves due to pressure differentials—making flat, stable enamel panels notoriously difficult to produce. That this table achieves such graphic precision and structural integrity speaks to the advanced craftsmanship involved in its making. Algot Törneman, the son of pioneering Swedish modernist Axel Törneman, brought an artist’s eye to design. His work bridges fine art and functional design—embracing the postwar Scandinavian ideal that everyday objects could also be expressive works of art. Commissioned and retailed through Nordiska Kompaniet’s exclusive design division, this piece would have been accessible only to a select group of collectors or design-forward clients. It reflects the Swedish studio craft movement’s intersection with modernism, where handcraft and bold color met streamlined architectural form. Vintage designers such as Poul Kjærholm, Greta Magnusson-Grossman, Finn Juhl, and Jens Risom would have appreciated and potentially used a piece like this in interiors for their progressive clients—those seeking objects that embodied material richness, sculptural form, and quiet intensity. Whether placed in a minimalist Scandinavian interior, a vibrant art-focused living space, or used as a centerpiece within an eclectic modernist collection, this table offers visual strength and rarity. A signed, numbered, and remarkably well-preserved example of high-level Scandinavian studio design, at once intimate and commanding.
