French Louis XV Chinoiserie Coffee Table, Attributed to Escalier de Cristal

About the Item

An exceptional French aubergine laqueured gilded bronze ormolu cocktail table attributed to Escalier de Cristal. Paris. Born in the late 19th / early 20th century, exquisitely hand-crafted by skilled Parisian artisans, exceptionally executed in elegant and sophisticated Louis XV taste, decorated in far-Eastern late Victorian Japanned styling. The scarce antique, circa 1900, believed to have originated as a parlor center table, likey having long legs shortened to a low table sometime in the mid-century when coffee tables came into fashion. The top executed in a striking exotic deep rich burgundy egg-plant color, with warm luxurious undertones and hues of ebony, dark red wine and the deepest purple illuminating from the depths of the glossy finish; contrasting hand painted gilded accents throughout, a cartouche-shaped tabletop with breath-taking Chinoiserie polychrome lacquered figural water landscape scenery beautifully carved in relief, featuring vivid gold-gilt, light blue and various shades of red; adorned with an abundance of exquisite decorative ormolu mounts, including the scalloped apron embellished with bronze ormolu mounts on everyside, rising on bronze ormolu mounted cabriole legs, terminating in patinated gilded bronze sabots. It will add a touch of unparalleled style and sophisticated elegance to your home and is perfect for those who enjoy unique, one of a kind works. Delivered cleaned, waxed, polished and ready for many years of use. Dimensions (approx): 20.75" H, 37.75" W, 27.5" D Created in 1804 by Marie Desarnaud, the Escalier de Cristal is a house located in the Royal Palace. It was taken over by Lahoche and Boin in 1847, then by Lahoche and Pannier in 1857 and finally by Pannier Frères from 1890 to 1923. When creating her establishment, Marie Desarnaud associated crystal and gilded bronze. The quality of her creations was unanimously recognized during the Exhibition of French Industry Products in 1819, where she obtained the gold medal. It was not until the end of Louis Philippe's reign, on the initiative of the Pannier brothers, that the store extended its activity to trade in furniture and began to manufacture cabinetmaking furniture around 1870. L'Escalier de Cristal specializes in copying 18th century furniture. The quality and the execution of these pieces of furniture are such that they were sometimes taken for originals. L'Escalier de Cristal won the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1900. The house closed its doors for good in 1923.
