About the Item

A stunning and exceptionally rare mid-century French Modern sculptural greyhound head two-tier table attributed to luxury Parisian design house Maison Jansen (Paris, France; 1880-1989) Dating to the mid-20th century, this scarce, quite likely one-off example is sure to bring a touch of refined elegance and sophistication to any space. Executed in timeless Italian Neo-classical taste (Directoire - Regency), inspired by the classic ancient Roman and Greek models, realized in bold and luxurious Modernist mixed metal materials, possible custom collaboration with Alain Delong or Guy Lefevre, having a square gilt metal accented silver-tone brushed steel frame with inset colorless glass panels, mounted with unusual distinctive finely detailed figural greyhound whippet dog head sculptures, raised on squared and tubular legs, terminating in sculpted paw feet. circa 1960 Combining inventiveness and elegance with strong modernist influence and metalwork, reminiscent of icons Willy Rizzo, Romeo Rega, Renato Zevi, Giovanni Banci, Meret Oppenheim, the artisan seamlessly blending clean lines, simple geometric shape, symmetry, with organic forms, and luxurious materials, we feel this table goes beyond the classification of a simple vintage table, becoming a sculptural element, a work of art that exudes sophistication, refinement, and subtle glamour. Founded in Paris in 1880 by Dutch designer Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928), Maison Jansen designs are renowned for their opulence, grandeur and luxury. Regarded as the most famous and influential interior decorator and furniture maker business in the world, with a range of clientele that counts important hotels and historical buildings, celebrities, kings, queens, and president's, including John and Jackie Kennedy's home and even the oval office in the US Whitehouse. Most sought-after for their Louis XV and XVI revival, Empire, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency glam, industrial Midcentury Modern, and animal form naturalistic works, commonly a swan, the company was known for its collaborations with some of the most celebrated artists and designers of the era, including André Arbus, Paul Follot, Alain Delong, Guy Lefevre and Pierre Legrain. The ability to create designs that transcend trends and remain relevant through the years is exemplification to the designers artistry, design acumen, and skillful craftsmanship. Even today, Jansen pieces continue to adorn the homes of design enthusiasts and discerning collectors, a testament to their enduring appeal. Dimensions: (approx) 21.75" High, 25.5" Wide, 25.5" Deep Coffee table, cocktail drinks table, lamp stand, large end table or low side table. Condition: A remarkable example in highly desirable original unrestored vintage condition with nicely aged patina. Overall good shape, strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Attractive appearance, moderately patinated throughout, with scattered spots of oxidation, verdigris, abrasions, heavily worn gilded finish with rubbing and losses, typical signs of wear consistent with age and use.
