Gio Ponti Domus Nova coffee table Italy 1950

About the Item

Iconic coffee table by one of the most important Italian architects of all times, Gio Ponti. A solid caramel walnut table crafted by Domus Nova. It's got that classy Gio Ponti shape with on top a sleek glass surface. A beautiful feature is the diamond-shaped graphic on the wood underneath the glass. The pinpoint feet have a super recognizable shape, making it iconic, especially when you look at it from the side. We've done a full restoration on the wooden frame, but we left the underside untouched to keep that original patina and age. The glass top sits on a wooden ledge, maintaining its originality with some scratches that tell a story of age and use. Literature; Gio Ponti. Le navi: il progetto degli interni navali 1948-1953. Giovanni ‘Gio’ Ponti, born in Milan 1891, was an important architect, industrial and furniture designer, artist, and publisher. During his career, which spanned six decades, Ponti built more than a hundred buildings in Italy and in the rest of the world. He designed a considerable number of decorative art and design objects as well as furniture. Ponti studied architecture at the Polytechnic University there. After serving in the army during World War I, he graduated in 1921. In 1923, Ponti entered into a partnership with Mino Fiocchi and Emilio Lancia and was influenced by the neoclassical Novecento Italiano movement. In 1928, he established the Domus magazine, which focused on architecture, art, and design, and is still being published today. During the late 1920s, Ponti built houses in Milan and Paris, including the domuses, which looked like typical Milanese homes from the outside, but had innovative interiors, with flexible spaces and modular furniture. • Giulio Lazzotti Megeia coffee table pair Italy 1979
    By Giulio Lazzotti
    Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Nice pair of coffee tables by Gulio Lazzotti and manufactured by Megeia, italy 1979. The base consists of four marble columns with beautiful cut lining. Three black and one white. Two black columns are shaped like half a cylinder. The other two are two cylinders with a diameter which perfectly fits in the half parts, a nice visual detail. The bases can be put in a playful position to your wishes. The large square tops are from thick glass. The tables are in excellent condition. Priced and sold in a set of 2. This Postmodern design resembles the relationship between ancient masonry skills and applying these traditions in modern forms. Like some other Italian designers, Lazzotti in particular has an innovative approach towards experimenting with form, especially in stone and marble, and applying these mainly into tables. Giulio Lazzotti is an Italian designer and architect who has always given an important place to objects’s sculptural dimension. A great lover of marble, his work is modern, reconciliating a sense of craftsmanship with industrial production. Often hired as a consultant for his experience, Giulio shares his attention to detail throughout the world and collaborates with major furniture brands. The name of the town where Giulio Lazzotti lives and works, Pietrasanta, can be alternately translated as Saint Peter or “holy stone,” the latter being wholly appropriate for a designer and architect whose work in marble, metal and wood takes on a serene, sculptural presence. Lazzotti was educated at the prestigious University of Florence, where he later returned to teach architecture. Since 1975, Lazzotti has maintained a diverse practice encompassing architecture, interior design and furniture design, winning such awards as first prize for Design at the Moving Fair of Paris, the Torre Guinigi prize in Lucca for Urban Design for the historical center of Pietrasanta, a top ten in the International Chair...

  • Gio Ponti Round Coffee Table in Walnut Wood Italian Manufacture 1950s
    By Gio Ponti
    Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Round coffee table realized in walnut wood with metal details, the tabletop presents an elegant circular decorative motif. Attribuited to Gio Ponti, Italian manufacturer from the 1950s Gio Ponti was an icon of the modernist movement: the Italian designer, architect, artist and publisher contributed significantly to the worlds of architecture and design with his extensive work in fine furniture and ceramics, education, office and residential buildings, and everything in between. Giovanni, known as Gio Ponti was born in 1891 in Milan. It was there that he spent his childhood, and in 1921 he began to study architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. From 1923 to 1930 he served as the artistic director of the Richard-Ginori porcelain factory. In 1927, Ponti started his first architectural office, together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he started the magazine Domus, which is still regarded as one of the most influential European magazines for architecture and design. He was also very influential during the period as a curator of the Milan Triennale. After his collaboration with Emilio Lancia had come to an end, upon completion of the Torre Rasini, he began to work as an architect together with the engineers Antonio Fornaroli and Eugenio Soncini...
