Mid century Modern Coffee Table in Hardwood & Marble, Jean Gillon, 1960s, Brazil

About the Item

What makes this coffee table unique is its sleek design, iconic to Jean Gillon. The legs are shaped like stakes, a signature feature seen in many of Gillon’s pieces, particularly in the Rodeio collection. Inspired by the cowboys of Brazil's countryside, the Rodeio collection includes stools, coffee tables, armchairs, and sofas, as depicted in the images from Jean Gillon's book. About the designer: Jean Gillon was a French-Brazilian designer and architect who was born in Romania in 1919. He studied architecture in France and began his career as an urban planner and designer of public spaces. In the 1950s, he moved to Brazil and established a successful furniture design studio in Sao Paulo. Gillon was particularly known for his use of Brazilian rosewood and other exotic woods, and his designs often featured clean lines and minimalist details. Gillon's work was highly influential in the Brazilian modernist movement, and he is considered one of the most important designers of his era. Some of Gillon's most iconic designs include the "Jangada" armchair, which features a curved frame and woven leather straps, and the "Psi" armchair, which has a sculptural form and comfortable seating. He also designed a range of tables, cabinets, and other furniture pieces that are still highly sought after today. Gillon's legacy continues to inspire designers and enthusiasts around the world, and his work remains a testament to the power of clean, functional design. He passed away in 2007 at the age of 88.

Brazilian Modern Credenza in Hardwood & Brass Handles, Jean Gillon, 1960s
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year. The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys. There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties. Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. The credenza is showcased in our showroom next to Jorge Zalszupin’s bar cart...
