Chinese Lacquered Console Table with Scroll Spandrels, c. 1900

About the Item

This early 20th-century console table has clean lines and minimalist appeal, simply decorated with relief-carved accents and an allover dark lacquer finish. Crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery, without the use of nails or screws, the table features a flat, floating-panel top and flush-sided corner legs ending in hoof feet. The legs are linked with straight stretchers and adorned on three sides with carved spandrels of geometric scrollwork. The meandering linework softens the table's angular silhouette, floating atop each leg like swirling clouds. Richly aged from years of use, the dark brown lacquer finish has developed a lovely, timeworn patina and has faded lightly along the corners to reveal the light color of the wood beneath.
