About the Item
An elegant and most unique French 19th century Empire St. Mahogany, Ormolu and Mirror planter/console. This exquisite freestanding elongated demi lune console is raised by on thick flame Mahogany plinth. At the front are two scrolled supports decorated by richly chased acanthus leaf and rosette Ormolu mounts. The original mirror backplate is flanked by two solid Mahogany columns with mottled bases. Above is the elegantly decorated apron with a central Ormolu mount of a gladiator in his chariot holding the reins fixed to two roaring lions. Behind the chariot is a flying winged cherub amidst the clouds, while the reserve is flanked by berried wreaths tied with bows. Above is the planter vessel with its metal interior liner.
