An important William IV period mahogany console from England, circa 1830 with the original brass mounts. Please take a moment to linger over the details that make this an impressive example of English cabinet making. The front of this antique English console table is distinguished by a raised plaque in the center emblazoned with a sunburst medallion of solid cast brass with superb detail. The plaque itself is rectangular in shape with each corner defined by a circular medallion centered on a bead with twelve evenly spaced lobes surrounding the bead. The cast brass starburst is surrounded by a raised edge of moulding in a geometric pattern of vertical and horizontal lines that reinforces the rectangular shape. By reaching under the plaque and pulling forward the drawer that is concealed within the apron may be easily opened to reveal a full width and depth for storage on the inside. The drawer front has a curved edge that follows the curve of the top as well as a pair of deeply recessed carved details that flank the plaque. These have the form of facing scrolls with a stylized fleur-de-lys placed above where the scrolls meet each other. The artisan of this console closely followed the design of similar tables by George Bullock and showed great skill in carving the scrolls as they change in thickness and in depth as they move from side to side. This subtlety and understanding of how the details would appear when placed in an interior illuminated with the light from candles, oil lamp lights and a fire blazing in the hearth are testament to the superior knowledge of the maker. The double beaded edge of the drawer on the lower edge continues across the front and the sides to continue the line across the entire piece and provides a visual break between the top and the legs. All four of the legs possess the identical form and this is an important clue as to the original placement of the console. By presenting an arresting appearance whether the console is approached from the front or either side the piece was undoubtedly meant to be seen from all directions on a regular basis. Given the lavish details and combination of materials this console was always meant to be an integral point of design and it would have been prominently displayed. Each leg has been fashioned from a single block of mahogany timber with an extraordinary amount of decorative detail that balances the beauty of the drawer above. The legs each begin with a rectangular top before descending to a series of four ring turnings that completely encircle each leg. A smooth section then follows before a large band of three dimensional acanthus leaves again encircle the leg with another series of ring turnings with a lower band of tall palm leaves visible from all directions. The lower two thirds of each leg take a completely different path with stylish fluting enhanced with deep grooves and a slightly wider base than top. The upper and lower edge of the fluting has a boundary created by a large single ring. In an inventive touch the bottom of each leg before the foot begins has an entire section of lobes that are slightly larger in scale than those seen in each of the four medallions in the corner of the plaque. This repetition of motif in a different scale comprises part of the elegant design of this console. The four feet of this console table are truly fantastic both in their composition and the effect they create in supporting the legs. Each foot is again cast in solid brass in a realistic manner to simulate the large paw of a wild beast. The hairy fur is at the top while the paw is below with separate toes and claws and all is rendered in a spectacularly life like manner. As they were chosen to be seen in the round they are equally as handsome whether seen from the front or side. It is rather amazing to see four legs all exhibiting this level of attention to detail seen here and the color of the mahogany and the brass is excellent after almost two hundred years. The top of the console has straight sides while the front edge has a profile with a single bow front flanked on both ends with a straight section. The entire top extends slightly beyond the lower section and gives a visually pleasing balance to the entire console. Please look at the top of the console to view the lustrous grain of the mahogany with its distinctive grain as it moves from side to side. This console is as potent in its presence today as it was when first installed in its original home.
