18th Century small Ladies Desk or Dressing Table, Louis XVI Poudreuse, c. 1780

About the Item

Small make-up and writing desk South Germany Louis XVI circa 1780 Dimensions: H x W x D: 74 x 96 x 52 cm Description: Antique multifunctional piece of furniture from the late 18th century. Desk standing on fluted and downwardly tapering pointed legs. There are three drawer fronts on the left and right, one above the kneehole. The original brass fittings and the brass keyhole surround contrast beautifully with the very light wood. Carved friezes and decorations can be found at the bottom as a surrounding profile and at the top of the knee hole to round off the sharp corners. The work surface is divided into three sections. In the middle is a hinged mirror with variable depth adjustment. The original mirror glass is minimally tarnished, absolutely usable and authentic. To the left and right of this are hinged compartments with underlying dividers. The left compartment has the spaciousness of two rows of drawers and was probably used to store larger bottles and flacons. The three-part hinged compartment on the right may have been used to store make-up utensils such as brushes, tissues, creams and powders. An excellently crafted piece of furniture in delicate and harmonious proportions. Condition: Restored and clean condition with a classic shellac hand polish.
