About the Item

19th Century Dutch Renaissance Desk ~ Writing Table is truly an intriguing design! Crafted from solid old-growth oak, it features a plank top resting over an artistically sculpted casework that is exactly one drawer depth tall, providing a light and airy look, especially when combined with the stripped finish. The "front" and "back" of the desk are carved the same, but drawers access only from the "back" side, and are carved with heraldic crest and acanthus foliates. The bridge between the drawers is also carved with acanthus rosettes contoured to follow the arched kneehole. Flanking each drawer is a bold three dimensional lion's head, with brass bale pulls as a nice accent. Even the sides have been lavishly carved for an attractive presence from any angle. The legs provide amazing support, and are of an ancient design with a criss-cross construction that is connected transversely for a total of eight feet and extraordinary stability. The legs are also adorned with Greek coin, lions' paw feet and a bust of a cherub at the juncture. Quality craftsmanship was employed to create this instant family heirloom!
