Brazilian Modern Desk in Hardwood with File Cabinet, Jorge Zalszupin, 1960s

About the Item

Available today, this desk with a file cabinet, designed by Jorge Zalszupin and produced by his company L’Atelier in the 1960s, highlights an innovative approach to Brazilian rosewood in a patchwork style. This technique, which involves a collage of rosewood pieces in various shades, showcases Zalszupin's dedication to both creativity and efficiency by effectively using leftover wood scraps from the factory. The desk and cabinet are separate elements, providing added versatility. The desk features a central slat that not only enhances stability but also contributes an elegant touch to its overall design. The original L’Atelier seal beneath the tabletop serves as a testament to its authenticity and craftsmanship. Notably, the desk can be folded with ease in three simple steps, making it practical and adaptable for a variety of spaces and purposes. The file cabinet is equipped with three drawers adorned with leather handles and retains its original wheels. Additionally, all four sides feature wood veneer, allowing it to function as a decorative standalone piece as well. About the designer: Jorge Zalszupin was a Brazilian architect and furniture designer who was born in Poland in 1922. He moved to Brazil in the 1950s and quickly became known for his innovative furniture designs that blended elements of European modernism with Brazilian warmth and tropical materials. Finally, Zalszupin's influence on the Brazilian design community has helped to shape a unique design aesthetic that continues to inspire designers around the world. Zalszupin's work was characterized by clean lines, bold shapes, and a playful use of color, and he created many iconic pieces of furniture that are still popular today. In addition, his furniture is known for its high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, which results in pieces that are both beautiful and durable. Zalszupin's furniture continues to be highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world, and his influence can be seen in the work of many contemporary designers who continue to draw inspiration from his innovative and playful approach to modern design. Zalszupin passed away in 2020 at the age of 98.

This feature allows large surfaces to be coated with a larger visual unit, making it easier to combine different furniture together. This writing desk is a dynamic piece, which can be used both in the corporate and domestic places, a characteristic very present in Zalszupin's production.
