Desk in Solid Hardwood, by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern

About the Item

This side desk is a mid-20th century Brazilian furniture piece designed by Sergio Rodrigues, made with Freijó wood. Freijó is a type of timber that is often used in Brazilian furniture for its beautiful grain and warm color. The table stands on sturdy, straight, quadrangular legs, with metal feet made of brushed steel/aluminum. These feet are characteristic of some mid-century designs, focusing on both form and function. It has 2 drawers, with the front seamlessly integrated into the design. The drawer has a circular recessed pull handle, which is centered and features a lock, hinting at the table's potential use for secure storage. The Freijó wood displays a rich, varied grain that adds to the table's visual appeal. The finish on the wood enhances its natural patterns and color, which ranges from a lighter yellowish-brown to a deeper reddish hue. The design reflects the clean lines and functional aesthetics typical of mid-century modern furniture. It has a minimalistic yet sophisticated look that emphasizes the natural beauty of the wood and the craftsmanship of the era. Sergio Rodrigues was a renowned Brazilian designer known for his use of robust local woods and designs that were both modern and reflective of Brazilian cultural influences. His pieces are highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts for their beauty, quality, and cultural significance. About the designer: Sergio Rodrigues is often regarded as the "father of modern Brazilian design." Born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, Rodrigues carved out a distinct niche in the realm of furniture design with his unique take on form, functionality, and aesthetics. He was instrumental in pioneering a design language that truly captured the essence of Brazilian culture, lifestyle, and materials. Sergio's work is characterized by its playful and organic forms, often inspired by Brazil's native landscapes, traditions, and materials. His use of local woods, combined with innovative construction techniques, gave his creations an identity that stood apart from European and North American mid-century designs.
