About the Item

Gio Ponti Directional Desk for Egidio Proserpio, mahogany, Italy, 1955 Executed by Egidio Proserpio in Barzanò, the “Directional” desk by Gio Ponti translates architectural precision into furniture form. The composition is deceptively simple: a thin rectangular top, three flush drawers, and sharply tapered legs that flare outward in a dynamic gesture. The absence of ornamentation highlights Ponti’s focus on proportion, structure, and material integrity. The drawers appear to float beneath the top, while the chamfered edges and recessed side panels reduce visual weight. Ponti’s signature is evident in the desk’s stance—elevated, poised, and subtly kinetic. Unlike his modular designs for industrial production, this desk belongs to a more tailored vocabulary. It reflects Ponti’s belief that furniture should act as micro-architecture: functional, sculptural, and inseparable from its spatial context.
