This is an elegant antique aesthetic period burr maple and ebonized writing table, stamped 'Edwards & Roberts' circa 1870 in date.
This elegant desk is crafted from the most beautiful maple with ebony banded decoration and ormolu beaded stringing.
The rectangular top is inset with a gold tooled dark green leather writing surface above two frieze drawers. It is raised on elegant twin turned and fluted column supports joined by a decorative stretcher and raised on outswept legs.
It is finished on all sides so that it can stand freely in the centre of your room.
Complete with workig locks and key.
Provenance:
Collection of the late Nigel Alington, Little Barford Manor House, Bedfordshire.

Made by the renowned English furniture maker Donald Ross, this desk is a demonstration of some of his finest work.
The desk is decorated with the iconic dotted parquetry trellis, and the centre is inset with a brown leather panel. Gold, debossed detailing adorns the border of the leather panel, its soft texture providing a smooth surface on which to write. An ormolu border frames the desk table top, the four edges mounted with motifs of male bearded masks among acanthus leaves.
Below are two lockable drawers, each one decorated in a similar manner to the desk table top. The pair of storage compartments are separated by a central ormolu mount cast in the form of flowing acanthus leaves and foliage garlands.
Four tapering legs support the desk, each one terminating in socket castors marked ‘JC’. Ross’ masterpiece is also labelled with a brass label ‘KG 8913’.
In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a bedside table by Donald Ross of a very similar design to the desk in Mayfair Gallery...

It has a small support on the top to hold candles or files in progress and a large barrel-fronted desk compartment with a quality interior.
Once the cylinder is opened, it reveals the interior of the desk with 10 maple veneer drawers and 6 pigeon holes to hold letters or any type of document to be sent or awaiting processing.
This desk has a slide at the front which has three compartments covered with original leather allowing on each side to leave the writings in progress for the left part, the inkwell and the writing utensils for the right part and a slope of writing which can be raised for the central part.
This first part rests on two pedestal bases, each composed of a series of three lockable drawers, equipped with original mahogany handles.
Both bases are still equipped with their original brass castors, making the desk easy to manoeuvre.
The desk is therefore divided into three individual sections, making it easy to transport and reassemble.
The originality of this piece of furniture lies in its closing mechanism.
A cylinder is a movable flap that folds down or up over a series of compartments and drawers, closing the top box of the desk to protect personal documents.
