Mahogany Dining Table & Set of Six Chairs, Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen, 1930s

About the Item

A beautiful solid Danish mahogany dining table and set of six chairs - exceptionally rare. Designed by Tove and Edvard Kindt Larsen, c. 1935. This is a particularly interesting example of a collaborative venture between Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen at the beginning of their careers. The tonality of the wood in both the table and chairs is beautifully warm, and the finish remains in incredible condition. The rectilinear dimensions of the table offset the acute angles of the chair-backs, resulting in a classic and timeless dining set. Traditional yet undoubtedly modern in detailing; this set points towards Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen's later designs. This set therefore represents a fulcrum of the spouses' departure away from traditional dining furniture. The Kindt-Larsen’s were known and are remembered for their awareness of trends in furniture design. However, this dining set predates the Kindt-Larsen’s expression of contemporary design, seen in their work throughout the 1950s. Rather, this set, with its elegant solidity, is most akin to the historically anchored work of Kaare Klint, a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In the late-1920s Klint taught both Tove & Edvard, most significantly perhaps, the importance of proportions -both historic and those informed by anthropometrics. Both the table and chairs have been thoughtfully restored, with a new off-white linen upholstered to the chairs. Some slight burn marks are evident on the leaves of the table, showing its past use. The table and chairs are available separately, price on request. Model 31 Armchair Alvar Aalto, Finland, 1930s
By Alvar Aalto
Located in London, GB
A model 31 armchair designed by one of Finland's most prestigious Modernist designers and architects, Alvar Aalto. The model 31 was designed by Aalto during the 1930s whilst he was working alongside his wife and partner, Aino Aalto, on the Paimio Sanitorium. Aalto won the commission for the tuberculosis hospital in 1929, and over 4 years built a gesamtkunstwerk, "total work of art", dedicated to physical and mental wellness in every capacity possible. Aalto described the sanatorium itself as a "medical instrument", prioritising ventilation and heliotherapy (sun exposure), with furniture functioning a core part of this finely tuned instrument. The low seat and gently reclining form of the model 31 is indicative of the environment of restfullness which Aino and Aalto sought to construct at Paimio. Much like the eponymous "Paimio Chair", the most recognised design from the project, the model 31 shares the scroll-like expression created by the continuous seat and back. However, unlike the "Paimio Chair" the model 31 has a cantilevered construction created by the sweeping curves of the laminated birch frame, inspired by the original "Freischwinger" by Mart Stam from 1926. This particular armchair was once owned by British artist and designer, Max Clendinning, and his partner Ralph Adron...
