About the Item

Valmarana table in ash wood designed by Carlo Scarpa and produced by Simon Gavina in the 1970s. Carlo Scarpa is a renowned architect with deep ties to Venice, where he was born and educated. He began collaborating with Murano glassworks in the 1920s and taught at the Regio Istituto Superiore di Architettura in Venice. His notable early work includes the restoration of Ca’ Foscari University in 1937, showcasing his innovative approaches to space and materials. Scarpa contributed significantly to exhibitions, particularly for the Venice Biennale, and designed influential museum spaces, including the Gallerie dell’Accademia and Museo Correr. His projects reflect his relationship with art, emphasizing the uniqueness of each piece, as seen in his Olivetti project in Piazza San Marco. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, Scarpa maintained a distinctive style that diverged from his contemporaries, with a keen interest in diverse historical contexts, including Far Eastern civilizations. His most significant project was the renovation of the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona, which involved intricate architectural interventions and set new standards in 20th-century museology. Scarpa's work consistently explored materials and building techniques, particularly steel and concrete, allowing for innovative interpretations in architecture.
