American Chippendale Mahogany Pembroke Side Table, Philadelphia c. 1790

About the Item

This is an exceptional American Chippendale Pembroke table, crafted with a very dense and vibrant grained Cuban mahogany top. The flow of the grains is incredibly attractive, the intense ribbing through the center made accentuated by the smooth straight grains along the edges of the leaves. Lifting over triangular wings that easily swing from their resting place integral with the frame, the surface is broad and highly functional. Both leaves retain their three original hand forged iron hinges. A single drawer eases in and out of the front of the table with a brass bail pull (replaced), the drawer front framed in an applied cockbead molding around most of the dovetails of the front joint. The bottom is deeply chamfered with triangular blocks set in the bevel to secure the drawer bottom firmly. Finishing the lower edge of the apron on both sides of the table is a thin tri-bead molding over the tapering Marlborough legs embellished with scrolling returns with a shapely "domed" saltire stretcher joining into the legs with a tenon; these lift vertically in a cyma-curving climb embellished by offset scrolls above and below each stretcher until they ultimately join half-lapped centrally. Truly eye catching are the crisp fluting and perfectly tapered form of each leg, this executed on the front and side of each leg with the interior corner being bevelled and interior sides left plain. They are sharp and very fine. Notes: Fine Points of Furniture: Early American, Sack, p. 249 - noting under "best" a table with identical stretcher American Furniture: Queen Anne and Chippendale Periods, Downs, f. 313 & 314 - two pembroke tables, one branded by Adam Hains and one attributed to the shop of Adam Hains c. 1790; both pembroke tables retain a nearly identical stretcher, though the stretcher scrolls on one are offset, the other slightly sharper. Both have tapered molded legs, though a characteristic of Hains shop is the square stub feet, these absent from the present example. Horner's Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture, Horner, pl. 288 - the "Morris" breakfast table, featuring identical domed stretcher with opposing scrolls supporting marlborough legs; with square drop leaves, straight apron molding identical to the present example, a single knob at the center of the drawer in the original manner of the present example American Furniture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Late Colonial Period - the Queen Anne and Chippendale Styles, Heckscher, p. 182-183 - discussion of the table featured in Fine Points (Sack, p. 249), including detailed construction notes that align closely with the present example Condition: Replaced bail pull, tiny scar from old knob in center of drawer. Old refinish with minor surface wear as expected; a few scars/burns to table top. Old repair to the front left leg where the stretcher joins the leg, the stretcher tenon also reglued for strength.
