Louis XV End Tables

LOUIS XV STYLE

The style of 18th-century French furniture was guided by the court. When Louis XV, who reigned from 1715–74, focused royal life on the smaller salons of Versailles rather than its grand chambers, it transformed the aesthetics away from the imposing and angular furniture that characterized the style of Louis XIV. A broader focus on comfort and more delicate forms define antique Louis XV furniture, with nature-inspired carvings, wood inlays, curved cabriole legs, asymmetrical shapes and rounded oval seat backs. The furnishings changed throughout the king’s life, as he ascended to the throne as a child and then grew to establish his own tastes.

Pieces like the bergère, an upholstered armchair with a wide cushion that fit the flowing dresses in fashion at the time, reflected this more informal court. Introduced at the start of Louis XV’s reign, bergère chairs in this style were deeper and broader than other chairs of the period.

Louis XV tapestries and carpets tended to be floral and colorful, and design elements were borrowed from Asia. Dutch-born cabinetmaker Bernard van Risenburgh brought lacquer techniques influenced by Japan and China into his luxuriously made furniture. Along with its fine details, the furniture of the era also featured new innovations including mechanical devices. Jean François Oeben, a royal cabinetmaker, created such intricate pieces as a mechanical table for Madame de Pompadour, Louis XV’s mistress. It involved a sliding top and a writing surface that extended from its marquetry panels.

During the later years of Louis XV’s reign, there was a shift from the ostentatious rocaille style, part of the exuberantly decorative Rococo movement in Europe for which designers such as Nicolas Pineau and Juste-Aurèle Meissonier are known. The style under Louis XVI would return to boxier forms, but with a neoclassical touch inspired by the ancient world.

Vintage Tomlinson French Louis XV Style Cherry Bedside End Table Nightstand
Located in Dayton, OH
"Tomlinson Louis XV / French Provincial style end table. Made from Cherry with a cello cutouts along the side, an inner cubby, dovetailed drawer and long tapered legs leading to slender stump feet. The table is accented with engraved trim in gold and features a French brass drawer pull. Marked along back side, 1161 Table Cherry Amber. The table was purchased was originally made in High Point, North Carolina and purchased from The Rike Kumler Company of Dayton Ohio in the 1960s. Tomlinson History Pay a visit to the town of High Point, North Carolina — long the capital of American-made furniture — and, from nearly any location in the city, you’ll see a tall smokestack bearing the name Tomlinson. It’s a name with deep roots there: In 1901, Sidney Halstead Tomlinson, Sr., and his brother founded the Tomlinson Chair Manufacturing Co., producing adaptations of 19th-century European antiques for an enthusiastic American audience. Later the Tomlinson Furniture Company grew rapidly over the ensuing decades, becoming a significant contributor to High Point’s thriving manufacturing economy. Although Tomlinson began with a focus on antique-style furniture, by the middle of the century the company had adopted aesthetics from the modern style that was rapidly growing in popularity around the world. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, Tomlinson Furniture produced coffee tables, storage cabinets and seating in the low-slung, sleek silhouettes that were typically characteristic of what we now know as mid-century modern designs. Working with designers like John Lubberts and Lambert Mulder, the company experimented with materials like woven cane and unique styles such as neoclassical lounge chairs in cherrywood that were seen as thoughtful modern interpretations of Biedermeier furniture. During the mid-1950s, Tomlinson Furniture introduced its dramatic and decorative Sophisticate line, a collection of case pieces, seating, tables and more, available in a variety of woods. Today, designs that originated in the collection, such as its pecan-framed chairs with seats and backs of woven leather straps, are increasingly sought after by collectors. Rike's History The company was established as the Rike-Kumler company in downtown Dayton, Ohio in 1853. They would remain independent until 1959 when they joined the Federated Department Stores company, at which time the company owned the then 650,000 sq ft downtown store, a 280,000 sq ft service building, two warehouses, and the Miami Hotel...

Romweber French Provincial Louis XV Rococo Serpentine Burl Nightstand End Table
Located in Dayton, OH
"Impressive French inspired nightstand or side table by Romweber Furniture, circa 1954. Features a serpentine or oxbow form with tiered surface and lower stoage cabinet. Made from an exotic African burled avodire wood. The rest of the case is accented with paint and gilt details. Features ornately scalloped accents, baroque trimmings and cabriole scrolled feet. Romweber's unique history dates back to the late 19th century and the three companies from which they evolved: the American Furniture Company, Batesville Cabinet Company, and Batesville Coffin Company. Each company started in 1879, making one of the nation's oldest case good furniture manufacturers. American Furniture Company manufactured bedroom furniture while Batesville Cabinet specialized in dining room furniture. Of course, Batesville Coffin is self-explanatory. When these companies merged, they shared a sales force. The salesmen traveled the nation, calling upon owners of furniture stores and directors of funeral homes - often one in the same. Products were sold and shipped coast to coast, quite a rarity at the time. 1930 - 1959 The Depression was a challenge to most business, Survival hinged on the ability to adapt and make products that were in demand during these lean economic times. In fact, RomWeber made five-pound fruitcake boxes to survive those tough years. Versatility came to the fore again during World War II when we made ammunition boxes and pontoons for American troops, and furniture for officers' quarters. The 60s and beyond Romweber furniture went to college with the baby boomers. Schools like Purdue, Indiana University, Xavier University, Miami University...
