About the Item

The Maison Chéreau, founded in 1816, is known for its particularly elaborate tables for high society and royalty, such as our six-legged solid bronze table. Typical of French billiards, our table is played on a pocketless table (without holes), with a green carpet, and is usually played by two players with three balls. This exceptional piece was located in the magnificent Renaissance style castle, the Château de la Cordelière. The table is sober and elegant is characteristic of the Charles X style and is for the 1820s an exceptional piece, especially for its mahogany veneer. It is supported by six superb gilded bronze legs with small scrolls, with the motif of lion heads with clawed feet. The intensity of the bronze, notably by the inlay of a dozen rosettes, highlights the dark color of the wood around the billiard table. The lions' mouths on the legs are now condemned, which indicates that the original table was with holes and was subsequently transformed "à la française" by the craftsman E. Guéret, for greater ease and to reinforce the noble aspect of this game, practiced by many sovereigns throughout the world. The mother-of-pearl cartouches indicating "Maison Chéreau, G. Blanchet & Cie, E. Guéret Sr." and "Médaille d'or, 13 [or 73] rue de Lancry, PARIS" were probably added during the French transformation.
