Carl Malmsten "Berg" Elder and Beech Side Table from the 1940s

About the Item

"Berg" Side table, a piece designed by renowned Swedish designer Carl Malmsten in the 1940s. Crafted from beech and elder wood and featuring a stunning tabletop with an intrincate veneer, this table exemplifies Malmsten's dedication to traditional craftsmanship and elegant design. The sculpted tripod legs and the graceful birch tabletop make this a standout piece for any living space. Malmsten's designs often pay attention to rounded edges as they are closer to nature. This intention can be noticed in the base, where the three legs gracefully touch the floor very soflty, this gives the structure a very light appearance. Condition This vintage table is in very good condition. It has been carefully restored to preserve its original charm and character. While it may show minor signs of use and age, these add to its unique vintage appeal. Dimensions Diameter: 39.4 inches Height: 24.8 inches About the Designer Carl Malmsten (December 7, 1888 - August 13, 1972) was a celebrated designer and architect known for his devotion to traditional Swedish craftsmanship (slöjd) and his opposition to functionalism. He believed that the rationalization of the home according to functionalist principles degraded its traditional role as an intimate gathering and resting place. Malmsten's work is characterized by his commitment to craftsmanship and functionality, focusing on creating pieces that are both beautiful and practical. His design philosophy emphasized respect for natural materials and ergonomics. In 1916, he won a design competition that allowed him to open his own studio. Throughout his career, Malmsten designed furniture for prestigious institutions, including the Swedish Parliament and Uppsala University. Among his most iconic pieces are the "Farmor" chair, the "Hemmakväll" dresser, and the "Samsas" armchair. These creations are celebrated for their elegant lines, use of high-quality woods, and meticulous attention to detail. The "Farmor" chair, for instance, is renowned for its comfort and timeless style, while the "Hemmakväll" dresser combines simplicity with unique functionality. Carl Malmsten left an indelible mark on furniture design and was also a passionate educator. He founded several design schools, including the Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies, which remains a leading institution for training designers. His legacy endures in his timeless pieces, which continue to be admired and used worldwide. In summary, Carl Malmsten is a cornerstone of Scandinavian design, whose work reflects a deep respect for craftsmanship and a commitment to creating furniture that combines beauty and functionality.
