Ceramic & Mahogany side table, Design Jens Thirslund for Kähler Ceramic, Denmark

About the Item

Scandinavian Mid-Century side table. Made of Ceramic tiles and Mahogany wood. Tiles made by Herman A Kähler Ceramic, located in the town of Naestved on the island of Zealand (southern Denmark). Kähler ceramics has been founded in 1839 and is still in business today. The brand is appreciated as one of Denmark's greatest 20th century ceramic successes. The drawings on the tiles have been created by Jens Thirslund (1892-1942). Born in Kolding in 1892. He visited the technical school in Copenhagen, then travelled to Berlin to study Persian Ceramics in the museums. He was taught as a painter. After he came back home he joined the Herman Kähler factory and married Kählers daughter. He became the art director and managed the Kähler factory between 1913 and 1941. He made especially tiles and objects like plates and boxes in tinglaze (white-black shaded finish he developed). Most of the time his work is not signed. The tiles of the table are signed with the company brand abbreviation "HAK" for Herman A. Kähler. Very good general condition, wood refinished.
