About the Item
This is an ancient wooden bed made by the Senufo people, who live in the area around Côte d'Ivoire and Mali in West Africa. The Senufo are known for their unique carving culture and are prized for incorporating beauty into their lives, from furniture to everyday objects. Its form is primitive yet somehow exudes a refined balance.
This piece, thought to have been made around the 20th century, was carefully carved from a single large piece of wood and exudes the powerful aesthetic of African form. It measures 221.6 cm in length and slender at 35.5 cm deep, giving it an overall sleek appearance. Triangular indentations on the sides create a unique rhythm and decorative effect. A raised triangular section is carved into one end, elevating it beyond mere bedding and elevating it to the height of a sculptural work.
Although originally used as a bed, it would also work well in modern spaces as a bench to sit on or as a low table in front of a sofa. The wood has a natural, aged texture. There's some darkening from use, suggesting that something was actually placed or sat on it. There's also a slight twisting throughout, but these are precisely the distinctive features of primitive furniture crafted from a single piece of wood, adding to its profound charm.
This piece blends seamlessly with Japanese and African interiors, as well as Scandinavian and modern spaces, adding a strong sense of individuality and depth to any space. Its sharp, linear form, while still striking, complements contemporary decor beautifully.
Because this item ships from Japan, shipping costs will be slightly higher due to its size and weight (26.9 kg). However, we've kept the price reasonable to compensate. This is a highly recommended item for those looking for a large piece of primitive furniture.
