Japanese old wooden low table/ wabisabi coffee table/1850-1920

About the Item

This Japanese antique wooden black low table was made between the late Edo and Meiji periods. All materials are cedar wood. Cedar has been a common wood used for tools and furniture in Japan since ancient times. The rustic grain of the top panel is beautiful. It was probably used as a work table. It has small scratches, dents and dings. Very old, some warping of the wood but in good condition. Since ancient times, people have created and passed down necessary tools from familiar materials to survive in the severe struggle against nature, and have nurtured a lifestyle culture. By using these objects over a long period of time, they accumulate their flavor and reflect the way of life. The more severe the natural environment and the weaker we are, the stronger their power becomes. In today's world, where cheap and disposable products are encouraged, the act of repeatedly re-creating the things around us by modifying them opens up a new world. With this philosophy in mind, we collect beautiful, powerful, and unique carefully selected antiquities from Japan.

The wooden box made from the Meiji period to the Taisho period (1868-1900). The wooden box made by combining simple cedar boards. I think it was a box that contained some tools. For many years, soot from the hearth and other parts stuck together and accumulated, resulting in such a black appearance. Don't worry, this soot won't stick to your hands if you touch it. It has a very beautiful black color overall and a simple shape. Good condition. It is a nice wooden box that makes you feel very wabisabi. It is also nice to use as a table or exhibition stand. Things like this are not everywhere. It's rare. Also, in Japan, such things are becoming less and less common. We believe that it is our mission to convey the charm of such old things and keep them. There are few stores that sell such items at 1st dibs. We sell with...
