About the Item

A rare version of the Tapio Wirkkala rhythmic veneer coffee table turned into wall hanging. The model is 9018, and aka Angel Wings due to the symmetric wing resembling rhytmic lines on top. The table is in beautiful condition and is stamped with manufacturer´s stamp on bottom. Tapio Wirkkala started generating and enhancing this rhytmic veneer technique in the 1940s with the Soinne Oy veneer factory. The thin outer surface of the veneer layer or plywood was enhanced in such a way that the direction and angel of the veneer produced 3 dimenssional patterns and leaf like oval figures. Asko eventually bought the rights to these techniques and started producing a number of different furnitures using it, and for a few years only starting in 1957. Rarely does a designer command such an expansive talent and career as Wirkkala did. Inspired by nature and armed with exceptional understanding of geomety and ratios, his designs literally shaped much of our daily lives. Designs ranging from daily items such as money, jewellery, cutlery, working tools, furniture, logos, etc. to purely artistic creations. You name it, he designed it! He tackled and mastered all workable materials like marble and stone as a sculptor to wood, fabric, glass, ceramics, metals and plastic. He did it all and can deservingly be named the da Vinci of Finnish design.
