Period Regency Rosewood Work Table

About the Item

This fine work table made in England, circa 1810 is of an unusual sculptural form and relates to the work of George Smith one of the periods most influential designers. Made of a sarcophagus form raised up on boldly sculpted andorsed curved legs headed by large acanthus leaf carving then turning down and out ending in large animal paw feet. The slightly domed top is veneered in an extravagantly chosen pattern of rosewood while the body is done in a rosewood containing rather straight grain. All the carving is done in rosewood solids. This wood a rare and very expensive resource was imported from the empires far-flung colonies and based singularly on the British Empires naval superiority thus encompassing the pride and power of the British Nation. To use freely solids and veneers with choice grains represents an expense associated with only the finest and proudest households. Work tables like this were the center of a fashionable women life and would house her personal endeavors in needlework, writing or handcraft. That it has a domed top indicates that this piece would never have done double duty as a table making it a further extravagance as a single purpose small station in a household where servants would have moved it about to suit the owner's needs. The interior upper section is crafted from blond mahogany and is divided into a number of separate compartments. The lower enclosed deep compartment pulls out on either side to store fabric or needlework in progress. Each section is lockable and comes with a key but the lock seems frozen and difficult to work. The piece is designed to read symmetrically identical from either side showing a high degree of concept and craftsmanship found in only the best cabinet makers. This table has a George Subkoff provenance. This firm a well-respected business which started in Manhattan has been in business for many years and now operates out of Connecticut.
