Pair of Italian Intaglios 19th Century Neoclassical Grand Tour Framed Cameos

About the Item

A pair of framed Grand Tour plaster intaglios dating from the early 19th century. This set of two Grand Tour neoclassical cameos compositions, consists of nine and five oval plaster cast medallions, depicting Greek philosopher profiles, mounted on shellac polished black lacquer wooden panels, set within 20th century white and black marble frame, rectangular shaped, with red profiles. In the neoclassic taste depicting Roman and Greek mythology figures as well as famous carvings. Most probably purchased during the early 19th century as Grand Tour objects, we have selected this set of antique intaglios in a Milan's home. They were both hanged on the wall. These two 19th century Italian intaglios would perfectly enhance a study by bringing the elegance and mythological diversity of classical antiquity into any home. Wear consistent with age and use, minor losses and chips on some cameo edges, please see image details. Cameos measuring 5 centimeters height x 4 centimeters width. Frames size in centimeters: Height: 30.5 x 30 width x 2.2 D. (Internal measures 23.5 x 22.5). and 32 x 24 x 3 cm measures the frame with 5 cameos. The Grand Tour was the traditional trip around Europe, often lasting three to four years, undertaken by the wealthy upper-class English during the 16th and 17th century. Their prime interest was to visit cities that were considered major centers of culture; Paris, Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples were popular destinations. During the 18th and 19th century, the opportunity to take the “Grand Tour” spread from the aristocracy to the new industrial and professional elites, tourist destinations such as Rome shifted their attention from the privileged class to meeting the travel needs of the monied middle-class, including a healthy souvenir trade. Souvenir engravings of tourist attractions began to appear everywhere. In addition to albums of engraved views, “the Grand Tour offered another very popular type of travel souvenir, the now nearly forgotten cameos. The taste for these engraved antique items was revived as part of the classical revival and later reproduced as miniature plaster casts.
