Pair of large painted & signed roundels of Romeo and Juliet. Wedgwood 1881.

About the Item

Wedgwood made a series of twelve hand-painted creamware dishes, featuring characters from Skaespeare's plays. We're not sure how many sets were made, but they don't show up very often, so it seems not many were made. This pair shows Romeo and Juliet - considerably older than in the play, and considerably more Victorian looking than Shakespeare would have imagined them. The chargers have been made with an embossed surface, and after painting the background has been gilded, and very nicely too. Hang them somewhere where they catch the light, and they positively sing. Each is signed by the artist, JP Hewitt, a talented painter of ceramics who worked for a number of English companies. Exhibited: Wedgwood, Master Potter to the Universe, Roche Foundation, 2023. "Romeo and Juliet" is a tragic play by William Shakespeare about our two young lovers from feuding families in Verona. Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight but their relationship faces numerous challenges due to the ongoing feud between their families. Despite their efforts to be together, a series of misunderstandings and tragic events lead to their untimely deaths. The play explores themes of love, fate, and the consequences of feuding.

Daisy Makeig Jones’ description relates this to Völuspá, a poem from the Poetic Edda, which is a collection of Old Norse poems. In Völuspá, it is said that the dwarves were created by the god Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and that they were condemned to live underground. The Light Elves are also mentioned in the poem as being allowed to live in the realm of Alfheim, which is a place of beauty and light. In Norse mythology...
