About the Item

A pair of framed Minton bird tiles designed by Christopher Dresser ca. 1875. These tiles are beautiful examples of Arts & Crafts pottery. Arts & Crafts designer Christopher Dresser’s works were true to the movement’s celebration of nature as a source of artistic inspiration and the aesthetic home as a sanctuary from modern life. Dresser’s educational training in botany is evident in these tiles, which depicts a pair of birds amongst a flat and almost scientific rendering of floral motifs. The pattern is shown in an original Mintons catalog from the London showroom where customers would select tiles to decorate their homes. Tiles such as these were placed around fireplaces. The back of the tiles are impressed with “Mintons China Works Stoke on Trent” as well as the Minton globe mark “Stoke Upon Trent Walbrook, London.” Condition: Excellent. Very small area of restoration to the upper left corner of the right tile. Minimal areas of enamel wear throughout. Dimensions: -Tiles: 15 3/4 in. W x 7 7/8 in. H x 3/8 in.
