About the Item

Dirck Hals, The cheerful company, oil on panel period 17th century Ancient painting of the 16th century datable around 1635, the scene represented is typical of the painting of Dirck Hals painter. The painting comes from a sale of Christie's London 1986 and since then it has always belonged to a private collector. Dirck or Dirk or Dirck Franchoisz Hals (Haarlem, 19 March 1591 (baptized) - Haarlem, 17 May 1656 (buried)) was a Dutch staffage painter, draftsman and painter of the golden century. It belonged to an Antwerp family who fled to Haarlem in 1585 after the Spanish invasion. Son of a costume designer and younger brother and a pupil of Frans Hals he also studied at Abraham Bloemaert and began his artistic career in 1618 in his hometown. Here he was active until his death in 1656, except for some periods, during which he worked in Leiden (in 1641-1642 and in 1648-1649). His first dated work dates back to 1621 and his marriage to Agnieta Jansdr from which seven children will be born between 1621 and 1635, baptized in the Reformed Church, is also from this period. Between 1618 and 1624, Hals was part of the Civic Guard of the Corporation of St. George and, together with his brother Frans, was a member of the oratorial society De Wijngaertranken (the tendrils). He was also a friend of the engraver Jan van de Velde II, present at the baptism of one of his sons and sworn witness that Dirck was the creditor of another engraver (Willem Akersloot) for a salary of 24 florins. This fact confirms how this artist worked in the employ of others before joining the Corporation of San Luca in 1627. Hals initially devoted himself to animal painting under the guidance of Abraham Bloemaert. Subsequently he concentrated almost exclusively on genre painting, in particular elegant conversations and cheerful companies made with bright and well-detailed colors and with smiling figures and sumptuous clothes, but with sober and contained attitudes, often set in houses and gardens of aristocratic society and generally small. He also painted some portraits. Painting authenticated by an expert.
