About the Item

Oil painting on canvas antique high vintage dimensions with frame 68 x 80 without frame 50 x 62.50 datable around the second half of the 17th century XVII. Subject The Madonna della Melagrana with child, a work of the Piedmontese school. The pictorial hand is extremely refined. Note the delicacy in the features of both the Madonna and the child, the result of a search for perfection. The red dress and the blue cloak are typical of the Madonna of the Pomegranate and the Child Jesus holds the fruit in his hand as the pictorial tradition wants. The pomegranate is a mythical fruit, always considered with positive connotations, which have stratified over the millennia. Originally the malum punicum, so called by the Romans because it came from the northern coasts of Africa, was used as a therapeutic fruit, which would have favored, among other things, motherhood. It is the fruit that can restore life even beyond death. For this reason, in many cultures, it is depicted in connection with sepulchres. But it is a message of joyful certainty. The fruit, in the hand of Christ or of the Madonna, therefore represents the joyful unity of every seed - the community of the faithful - and at the same time remembers the blood of Christ, on which the union between man and God is cemented. In our painting this message of joy shines in an excellent way thanks also to the sweetness of the faces and the deeds of the Madonna. The painting as visible from the images has undergone an intervention of lining the canvas and frame. The original canvas is however clearly visible on the side and on the front you can also notice the craquelè from the spiral shape typical of the seventeenth century. The beautiful Baroque-style wooden frame carved and decorated with gold leaf is of non-coeval manufacture dating back to the early twentieth century
