About the Item

A pair of Old Master Roman School still life pantings in pendant by Antonio Tibaldi, Rome circa 1631-1675, dating back to the third quarter of 17th century, in good age related condition. A plumed helmet, armour and a lance with a bronze statuette and a figured clock on a partly draped ledge, with a mace and propped shield alongside and a curtain beyond; and a metallic pitcher and vases, a platter and a bronze statuette on a partly draped marble ledge, a curtain beyond, These oil on canvas paintings have been studied and illustrated by dr. Gianluca Bocchi, leading expert on still life painters in Rome from 1630 to 1750 and author of four books entirely dedicated to still life painting in Italy. Dr.Bocchi has recently included our pair of paintings in PARMA PER L’ARTE, a magazine for art and culture, published in December 2021, see hereby listed pictures. These two antique paintings, with an extraordinary scenic effect, are among the most significant works of the Roman painter Antonio Tibaldi. The first still life shows a mantle-clock with lion figure set on architectural bases, a golden statue with brocade carpet and curtain and armour with a shield, a plumbed helmet and various weapons intended to reflect and celebrate the patron's military virtues. The second work depicts silverware and tableware, a still life with brocade carpet, curtain, ewers, vases and golden statue. In these works, Tibaldi's pictorial skill reaches an apogee of virtuosity in the description of metallic objects: in the reflective luminosity of the shield, precise rendering of the cuirass, metal spikes of the mace and reflections of the double handled silver vase. Antonio Tibaldi's works predominantly describe displays - ornate carpets, draped over ornamented stone pedestals, on which are arranged all the typical items of the artist's repertoire. His paintings are usually arranged within horizontal compositions, framed by heavy curtains in the background, such as the present paintings. The Baroque still life becomes one of the most requested subjects by collectors in the Roman context, very influenced by naturalistic imprint and chiaro scuro light by Caravaggio. The composition is purely decorative with excellent formal balance, rich of illusionistic expedients in order to amaze; there are also traces of the vanitas such as the cracks in the architectural bases, the clock, the jug and the overturned goblet, all signs of time passing. The classical gilded statuettes, the table clock with gilded lion, inspired by the Karl-Schmidt automaton table clock, all luxury elements reflecting the status of collectors and above all they are favorite collectables of Roman collecting in the second half of the 17th century. For the most intense lights Tibaldi uses thin filaments of material thickened color, to accentuate the mimesis of the relief. This technique, shared by many Masters in carpet still life sub genre, is extended to the description of brocade, in which the gold and silver threads are in relief, creating a bas-relief effect compared to the silk or velvet background. Tibaldi emphasizes the effects of light intercepted by metal materials enhances its precious connotation, and particularly indulges in the arrangement of the silver and gold threads to design the decorations, varying the intensity and chiaroscuro in relation to the light highlighted by the large folds of the fabrics. As dr. Bocchi underlines in his literature, as far as our pair of still life paintings is concerned, Tibaldi's pictorial virtuosity is best expressed in the mimetic rendering of metals, in the glitters of the shield, in the descriptive accuracy of the armor, in the reflections in the silver handled vase. Antonio Tibaldi (Rome, c. 1631/32 - documented until 1675), a talented epigonous painter of Francesco Noletti known as Fieravino and called il Maltese, from whom he acquired his complex iconographic repertoire. The artist has recently been rediscovered by the community, owing to the discovery of a painting inscribed Il Tibaldi Romano, on the spine of a book and of another which is signed Ant.Tibaldi. Subsequent research has therefore focused on parish archives which has turned up the artist's registration in the Stati delle anime of 1675 in the parish of Santa Maria del Popolo. A survey of the inventories of historic Roman collections also allowed the identification of some of his most powerful patrons: the Barberini- Pope Urban VII- and the Chigi - Pope Alexande VII. Additionally, in the 1679 inventory of Lorenzo Onofrio COlonna the artist's name features in relation to various small paintings on copper representing birds and fruits. It is therefore evident from such illustrious patronage that Antonio Tibaldi enjoyed considerable esteem from the Roman elite, which was especially inclined to such sumptuous still-life subjects. Both paintings are in good age related condition, coming from a private collection of Milan. Canvas are lined, have been cleaned and varnished and show minor painting retouches consistent with age and use. Listed size is relative to frame.
