18th Century French Oil Painting of the Marquis de Rochambeau in Gilt Frame

About the Item

This beautiful antique oil on canvas was created in Paris, France circa 1760. Set in the original carved gilt frame, the portrait depicts the Marquis de Rochambeau dressed in formal clothing. The composition has fine, colorful details throughout the clothing and facial expressions. The painting, which could possibly be from the school of Jean Marc Nattier (1685-1766), is in excellent condition. Marshal Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Count de Rochambeau (1725-1807), was a French nobleman and Army general. The Comte played a major role with the Marquis de Lafayette, in helping the Thirteen Colonies win independence during the American Revolution. During this time, he served as commander-in-chief of the French Expeditionary Force that embarked from France in order to help the American Continental Army fight against British forces. He played a decisive role at Yorktown in 1781. Measures: 26"W x 31.5"H.

It was between the French Republican army and the Allied Coalition army, and resulted in an Allied Victory. A possible signature is not legible in the lower left corner of painting.
