1950s Outsider Art Still Life Painting
About the Item
A modernist contemplative allegorical still life vanitas type painting on masonite board. Circa 1950. This work originates from a Western Connecticut estate. The work is unsigned. The artist renders several derelict objects in paint: a worn and torn circus poster, a broken umbrella, a headless teddy bear, a wilting plucked flower with scattered bits of ribbon. The menacing little clown doll with folded hands has a bemused smile on its face. Vanitas paintings done by any of the Old Masters basically signified the futility of earthly objects. The iconography of these particular objects tacked or hanging from the door can be debate.
Good overall condition with cosmetic wear and minor paint losses around the edge. Masonite board is in good condition with worn edges and corners. Unframed.
