About the Item
Decorate an office or den with this antique serene maritime landscape painting. Created in Holland circa 1895, and set in the original carved giltwood frame, the large painting is attributed to Herman Willem Koekkoek (1867–1929), a member of the prolific Koekkoek family of Dutch painters known for their atmospheric landscapes and marine scenes. Executed with the characteristic precision and mood of the Dutch Romantic tradition, the composition captures a bustling harbor scene under a dramatic sky, evoking both tranquility and daily life. In the foreground, groups of finely detailed figures in traditional dress congregate near moored boats, engaging in conversation and trade. The sweeping shoreline curves gently toward the right, where sailboats dot the water, some already drifting toward the horizon. On the left, a village with whitewashed buildings and a prominent church spire anchors the composition, leading the viewer's eye into the depth of the landscape. Koekkoek’s skillful rendering of light and shadow is evident in the soft golden tones cast across the sails and figures, contrasted by the cooler blue-gray hues of the expansive sky. His refined brushwork and attention to cloud formation lend the piece an ethereal, almost theatrical quality, while the detailed architecture and costume add a strong sense of place and time.
Hermanus Willem Koekkoek (7 January 1867 - 9 September 1929) was a Dutch painter, illustrator and water colorist. He was the son of Willem Koekkoek and great-grandson of Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek, carried on the family’s legacy into the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though best known for his military and battle scenes, he also painted landscapes and seascapes, often with a romanticized or nostalgic tone. This harbor view reflects his mastery of atmospheric detail and narrative composition, making it a fine example of Dutch maritime painting.

18th Century French Pastoral and Harbor Scene Oil Painting in Ornate Gilt Frame
Located in Dallas, TX
This monumental antique oil on canvas painting was created in France, circa 1790. Set in a carved gilt frame, the large artwork depicts a pastoral scene with the port of Marseilles in the background; it features people playing cards around a table, one lady napping with a dog beside her, another woman with her kid carrying flowers, a man courting a young beauty sitting on a bench, and horses in movement. The inscription on the rider's flag reads "Liberte de L'Escaut 1793," likely referring to the Battle of Raismes (also known as the Battle of Conde or St. Amand) which took place on 8 May 1793, during the Flanders Campaign of the Wars of the French Revolution. It was between the French Republican army and the Allied Coalition army, and resulted in an Allied Victory. A possible signature is not legible in the lower left corner of painting. The important painting is in excellent condition with lots of wonderful and interesting details, and embellished with an elegant frame! Place this huge artwork...

19th Century Oil on Canvas Attributed to James Webb of The Liege
By James Webb
Located in Chicago, IL
This striking oil on canvas attributed to James Webb titled "Liege" depicts a river scene in the city of Liege, Belgium. This exquisite cityscape features various boats docked at port, alongside crowds of passers-by. The painting recedes into mountainous views before hazily meeting a blue sky, speckled with clouds. This atmospheric landscape invites the viewer to peruse the past and get lost in the intimate details of Liege, Belgium.
