19th Century English Landscape Painting Oil on Canvas

About the Item

English school, 19th century. Landscape Oil on canvas, measures : cm 50 x 76 Frame cm 68 x 96 The painting in question, of the English school, refers explicitly to the poetics of John Constable (1776-1837), famous British painter specializing in the realization of landscapes. He is largely responsible for reviving the importance of landscape painting in the 19th century. A key event, if you remember that this would become the recurring theme in impressionist painting later in the century. Constable began painting his father’s farm, The Hay Wain (London, National Gallery of Arts), on large six-foot canvases. These "six feet", as they are commonly called, challenged the status quo of the genre, elevating the landscape to a historical subject. The canvas presented here, referring to the subjects painted by Constable, includes a genre element, namely the figure crouched next to the trunk of the tree in the foreground near the stream. But it is a smaller part of the painting than the pure landscape that takes over. Unlike the Impressionists, Constable’s large canvases were painted in his studio, after he made a sketch of the subject he wanted to depict and which provided him with a basis for deepening the many details present in his paintings. The trees are finely taken up, diversifying the species according to the leaves; the clouds are scientifically delineated, thanks to the meteorology studies that the artist undertook to be as accurate as possible in the yield of weather conditions. Born in the Age of Enlightenment, Constable had absolute confidence in the sciences and the political and social implications of the Industrial Revolution on his painting also had great influence. The rural landscape thus became a symbol of a lost Eden, a place of childhood, where the air and water, the open spaces and the hard and honest work of agriculture contrasted sharply with the perceived evils of modern urban life. Constable’s art thus functions as an expression of the growing importance of rural life, at least from the point of view of the rich urban elite to whom these canvases were destined.

  • 19th Century View of Pisa Painting Oil on Canvas Attributed to Della Valle

Ferdinando Della Valle (1786-1815), attr. View of Piazza dei Miracoli in Pisa Oil on canvas, 50.5 x 71.5 cm With frame 54 x 84.5 cm The present gives a glimpse of Pisa's Piazza dei Miracoli with limpid clarity. First named by D'annunzio, who destined this expression to eternal fame ("Prato dei Miracoli"), the pivotal monuments of the ecclesiastical system are depicted here in an orderly foreshortening. The Camposanto acts as an architectural backdrop, an evocative cemetery gallery dedicated to the cult of the dead, adorned with the capital Triumph of death painted by Boccaccio's Buonamico Buffalmacco. The extraordinary architectural unity boasted by the square, despite the construction in echelons of the buildings that are representative of it from the mid-eleventh century to the end of the fourteenth, is clarified in the solid silhouette of the Baptistery, or more correctly ecclesia baptismalis; built starting from 1153 thanks to the successful architectural solutions devised by Diotisalvi, the architectural body was finished in the fourteenth with the addition of Gothic elements. The baptistery follows, in style, the so-called “Pisan Romanesque”, taking its historiographic origin from the type of the Duomo. This, cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was built in 1064 to mark the glories of the Republic of Pisa, then a powerful seafarer; an epigraph on the outside of the building recalls the desire to build a "snow-white marble temple" thanks to the shrewd direction of the architect Buscheto. The homage to the greatness of the city was emphasized in the various pieces of "re-use" that dot its surfaces and which were quarried from Rome, to underline Pisa as the alter Urbs, heir to the most deeply rooted Romanitas. The iconic bell tower, known as the Leaning Tower, was begun in 1173, when a sudden subsidence of the unfavorably clayey ground caused the interruption of the works and an inclination, in later times, of the vertical axis of the tower by four degrees (today five); construction continued in 1275. Beyond the right direction which now leads the eye to the Tower, the building now replaced by the current Museo dell'Opera del Duomo can be observed. Once the Sala del Capitolo della Primaziale, then the residence of the canons of the Duomo and then the diocesan seminary (commissioned by Carlo Antonio Dal...
