19th Century French Oil on Canvas, "Fish Friday" by Charles Edouart Delort

About the Item

Painted by the renowned 19th-century French artist, Charles Edouart (sometimes spelled “Edouard”) Delort, this vibrant oil on canvas painting depicts a large silver fish being presented to a Catholic cardinal and bishop. It is symbolic of the observance of the canon law of the Latin Church, which requires the abstinence of meat on Fridays, hence the title of the painting, Fish Friday. This style of art, sometimes referred to simply as “cardinal paintings”, became quite popular at the Paris Art Salons during the late 19th century, as the Third Republic (the French system of government after 1870) began to distance itself from the church. This satirical genre was meant to shed light on the opulent lifestyles of the high-ranking ecclesiastical elite. A defining trait of cardinal paintings is the depiction of one or more cardinals in a bright red robe, merrily enjoying the riches of their daily lives. Notice the vivacity of the cardinal’s vestments, especially when compared to the bishop dressed in black behind him. The presenter of the fish is dressed in neutral colors, such as beige and white, further allowing the cardinal to stand out. A green table with a matching bench can be seen to the side of the trio of men. A silver serving set is on top of the table, along with some porcelain cups, while a book and some papers lay on the bench. On the opposite side of the table is a caned chair that resides in front of a long stone bench. The bench is built into a gray stone wall topped with a classical urn filled with a tall bouquet of red flowers. In the background is a small hill with trees lining the crest. Delort was born in Nimes, France in 1841. At the age of 18, Delort entered the studio of Charles Gleyre, who would later mentor the likes of Renoir and Monet. Delort debuted at the Paris Salon in 1866 and would regularly exhibit for the next decade, mainly painting scenes that detailed life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Considered an academic painter, Delort had an innate ability to render amazing colors in his works, as evidenced by this “Fish Friday” painting.

  • 19th Century French Oil Painting, Horse Racing on the Beaches of Saint-Malo
    Located in Dallas, TX
Saint-Malo, France is located on the Northern coast of Brittany and has a long history of overseas adventures, exploration, and of course, piracy. Saint-Malo eventually became a wealthy French port city over the centuries, allowing for such leisure activities as horse displays, including parading and racing. It is thought that horse racing on the beaches was taking place by at least the early 1800s in Saint-Malo. The oil on canvas painting seen here is a fantastic depiction of such an event during the 1840s. A giltwood frame with thick cavetto molding surrounds the colorful and vivacious scene. In the center of the painting, jockeys ride galloping horses between two flagpoles. There is a definitive international flair, with flags ranging from French to Swedish affixed to a judges’ platform on the side. In the foreground, a procession of petite noblesse arrives, led by a quartet of well-dressed gentlemen on horseback. Two carriages follow, one blue and one green, each led by a team of two horses. Soldiers dressed in blue overcoats and red pants walk the grounds with a leashed dog in tow as a woman in a long, deep blue dress rides by with a green train flowing from her black hat. A sea of spectators gathers behind the judges, lined against the wall surrounding the city. Some enterprising fans are perched atop pruned trees beneath the wall as well. A blue sky filled with white fluffy clouds fills the background, above even more spectators lining the balconies of buildings behind the wall. The wall extends further down the beach, in front of cream colored houses and windmills at the end of the city. At over three and a half feet wide, this 19th century painting of horse racing...

This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. Based on the size and vertical orientation, the scene was most likely part of a French boiserie room...
