Neapolitan School, late 19th century – View of the Bay of Naples from the Beach
Delicately rendered in watercolor heightened with opaque gouache, this late-Grand-Tour vista looks east across the limpid Bay of Naples toward the slopes of Vesuvius, its subtle pink-blue sky mirrored in the calm water. Fishermen haul their boats onto a crescent of sand in the foreground, while a small stone watch-tower and a curving military rampart lead the eye toward distant headlands dotted with sailboats. Transparent washes, crisp white body-color and fine pen outlines create the luminous atmospheric effects prized by travellers who collected these Neapolitan souvenir views in the 1880s–90s. The piece is set behind glass in a charcoal-grey mount and an ebonised slip within a moulded gilt wood frame with beaded sight edge. Framed dimensions: 12 ¼ in H × 17 in W × ½ in D (≈ 31 × 43 × 1.5 cm).
