About the Item
Eugène Millet exhibited at the Paris Salon, from 1866, genre scenes and still lifes. He is probably the artist from whom the Vieillard factory asked for the splendid models of the service of the large birds. Our historical scene, painted with meticulousness leaving a gold background to show through, follows in the footsteps of Ernest Meissonier (we also notice that the artist writes the initial of his first name upside down, like the said Meissonier). Gallant Spaniards in 18th century clothes converse around a vase from the "Alhambra". Masterpieces of medieval Hispano-Moorish ceramics, such vases had been discovered in the Alhambra in Granada. Théodore Deck achieved great success by creating a modern imitation of this model, presented at the Universal Exhibition in London in 1862 and then mass-produced. No doubt this "revival" inspired our painter. cleaning and minor restorations.
