19th Century Procession Painting Oil on Canvas by Marco De Gregorio

About the Item

Marco De Gregorio (Resin, 1829 - 1876) Procession Oil on canvas, 53 x 44 cm Frame 55.5 x 46 cm The work can be attributed to the hand of Marco De Gregorio (1829-1876) painter born in Resina (now Herculaneum, in the province of Naples). He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples where he was especially interested in historical painting. In 1858 he hosted the landscape painter Federico Rossano in his home in Portici and starting from 1863 the two painter friends, together with the young Apulian Giuseppe De Nittis and the Tuscan Adriano Cecioni, gave life to the artistic movement called Scuola di Resìna, to which various artists, including Raffaele Belliazzi, Alceste Campriani, Antonino Leto and Edoardo Dalbono. The motifs of the painting of the Resìna School were similar to those of the Tuscan school of Pergentina, to which Raffaello Sernesi, Giuseppe Abbati and Silvestro Lega belonged. love for the real landscape and the scenes of everyday life, compositional clarity, a touch of sentimentality, or rather intimism. The chromatic refinement of the painters of the Resìna School was distinguished from the flamboyant chromatism, which a large part of the Posillipo School had reached. The most famous works by Marco De Gregorio, made by him in the sixties and seventies of the nineteenth century, are Veduta di Porta Grande and Veduta di Casacalenda (both exhibited at the National Museum of Capodimonte in Naples), Arab market at the Accademia Gallery ( Naples). In 1872 the painter from Campania went to Florence, to forge greater relations with the Macchiaioli, previously known through Adriano Cecioni. Other works of his are kept in Naples, in the San Martino Museum. In the painting examined here, a village scene is represented. In the background is the facade of a church, distinguishable from the rose window at the top left, and a building from whose window some people look out, observing the procession that is advancing on the square below. In the procession we recognize some women dressed in white and with their heads covered by a long veil, a little girl wearing a brightly colored robe and holding a cross in her hand and the priest, represented on the left, intent on reciting some homily. In the foreground, detached from the procession, the presence of a man who walks proudly is striking, wearing a military uniform, a tricorn with a high plumage and holding a scepter. It is a painting of great realism.
