About the Item

19th Century Still Life on Copper – Flemish School Tradition Oil on copper, 15.3 × 20.3 cm A finely executed 19th century still life, painted in the manner of the Flemish Baroque masters of the 17th century. The composition features luscious grapes, peaches, a lemon, oysters, and a glass of red wine arranged on a table. The artist demonstrates great attention to detail and light, capturing the reflective qualities of the fruit and glass against a rich dark background. Painted on a copper plate, the work follows a long tradition of cabinet pieces prized for their brilliance and durability. While unsigned, the painting clearly reflects the influence of Antwerp still life painters such as Jan Davidsz. de Heem and Joris van Son, with its abundance of fruit and luxurious presentation. Condition In fair condition with signs of age. Surface shows some scratches and minor paint losses, particularly along the edges. The reverse of the copper plate displays natural oxidation (verdigris), consistent with age. Vernis fluoresces evenly under UV light, suggesting an older surface without major later retouching. Provenance Private collection, Belgium. Notes This is a 19th century work created in the style of the Flemish School still life tradition. Its small format and fine execution make it a desirable decorative piece, reflecting the enduring appeal of 17th century still life painting.
