About the Item
Stanley Sobossek (American, 1918-1996), View through a Window, oil on canvas, signed lower left.
This artwork by American artist Stanley Sobossek depicts an impressionistic view of a rural landscape as seen through a window. The scene is calm and reflective, using soft, earthy colors and loose brushstrokes to evoke a sense of nostalgia and tranquility. The painting has a trompe l'oeil effect where the curtained window and the frame seem one and the same. A table and small objects in the foreground add a layer of depth, inviting the viewer into the scene. The landscape outside features small, rustic houses, a waterway, and boats, all invoking a peaceful rural atmosphere.
Sobossek uses a gentle, subdued color palette dominated by greens, yellows, and blues, giving the work a calm, almost misty quality that complements the serene setting. His brushwork is expressive yet restrained, combining elements of impressionism with abstract undertones. The loose and layered strokes convey movement and texture, emphasizing mood over detail.
Sobossek’s work here is in line with American Impressionism, blending traditional landscape elements with a more personal, interpretive approach that conveys emotion and atmosphere over precise realism.
This painting is a beautiful example of Sobossek's ability to evoke mood and memory through impressionistic landscapes, making it a compelling addition for collectors who appreciate introspective and evocative rural scenes.
