About the Item
Charming Oil on Panel by Alfred Dickman Bastin (1849-1913), last quarter of the 19th century. Complete with its original high quality giltwood frame.
Depicts an interior view with a Lady playing with her Kitten using a ball of wool. Titled “A mischievous Kitten”
Signed lower left A.D. Bastin.
Condition: Both Painting and Frame are in nice clean showroom condition.
Measures: Height (entire including frame) 13.5" (34.25cm), width (entire including frame) 11.5” (29.25cm).
Height (image only) 9.25” (23.5cm), width (image only) 7” (18cm).
Location: Dublin City, Ireland.
Alfred Dickman Bastin was born in the St. Pancras district of London in 1849. Interestingly in 1861, he was a visitor, aged 11, at the home of his future wife Emily Elizabeth Dickman, aged 8, who he married in 1883. Judging by their names, they were probably cousins.
He lived in Manchester for 3 years between 1879 and 1881, but by 1891, he and his wife had moved to Egham in Surrey, with their daughter Emily Muriel Russell Bastin and one servant. By 1911, they were living in a 10 roomed house in Downview Road, West Worthing in Sussex with two servants and his spinster sister, where he died in 1913.
He was a painter of genre in oils and watercolours and obviously made a comfortable living. He exhibited from 1871-1907 in London and the provinces, including 1 at the Royal Academy, 13 at the Birmingham City Art Gallery, 10 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 3 at the Royal Society of British Artists and 1 at Manchester City Art Gallery and 1 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute.
He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood.

Glenquinn Castle was built in 1462 by the Ó hAilgheanáin (O'Hallinans), on the site of an older building dating back to AD 983. It was taken by the Uí Briain (O'Briens), and during the Desmond Rebellions (1569) it fell to the Geraldines until the Crown confiscated their lands in 1571. The castle was partly demolished by Walter Raleigh. By 1587 it was in the hands of the Hungerford; in 1591 it went to Sir William Courtenay, and in 1595 to a Captain Collum. It was restored by William Courtenay, 10th Earl of Devon in 1840.
