Antique Belle-Epoque French Floral Still-Life Oil Painting on Stretched Canvas
About the Item
An original oil painting on stretched canvas from la Belle-Epoque (1871-1912). An unusual vertical format and a lovely floral still-life of wildflowers make this antique French painting stand out. The painting is signed in red by the artist, Marie, along the lower edge but is not dated. It most likely dates from the turn of last century, i.e. late 1800s/early 1900s. The painting has been sourced in Alsace in north-eastern France.
This painting features a romantic and delicate floral motif of poppies in white and soft shades of pink together with wild grass. Pink poppies are said to symbolize compassion and platonic love. The background is painted in soft shades of green.
The canvas has been mounted on a wooden stretcher frame with corner tightening wedges (one is missing in the upper left corner). The painting comes in its original, ornate, gilded frame.
In fair antique condition. The painting itself has not been cleaned, I leave that decision up to the new owner. The colors can certainly benefit from a light cleaning. The painting shows minor signs of wear consistent with age (see photos). The painting has most likely been stored under some weight for quite some time which has resulted in slight traces of the wooden stretcher frame on the canvas itself (see photos). The canvas can be stretched slightly with the help of the corner tightening wedges but this should be done carefully without its frame. The original frame is still sturdy in its structure but has several sections of gilded decor missing (see photos). The missing sections and some worn parts of the frame have been lightly retouched with gold paint in order to be less visible. The frame can thus be left as is or be restored.
