About the Item
A large, romantic landscape in soft pastel colors. This original oil painting on stretched canvas is signed and dated 1955 by the French artist A. Erb (1911-2005), see lower right corner.
Alfred Erb was born April 6, 1911 in the town of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, south-west of Strasbourg, France, in the Alsace region. A. Erb is known for his idyllic, local landscapes painted in an impressionist inspired style. The painting has been sourced in Alsace.
This particular painting was realized relatively early in A.Erb's career (1955) and features, for him, a rather unusual color palet of soft pastel colors. The motif is a typical rural landscape from the Alsace region depicting a stream/river leading up to a small village.
The painting is sold as is, unframed.
In good vintage condition. The painting has not been cleaned, I leave that decision up to the new owner. The canvas has no major scratches, missing paint or other flaws. There are some minor signs of wear (scratches and crackles) consistant with age and display (see photos). There are traces of a former frame around the edges. There is a small hole on the canvas on the lower edge. No structural issues.
